This is the renovation of an old village house in the Gard, in France.

Consisting originally of two adjacent buildings of different periods, the main proposal was to unite these two buildings by inserting a new staircase up the middle. This centres the house, and greatly improves general circulation, as well as allow access to a previously inaccessible top floor and the addition of three new bedrooms and a bathroom.

Part of the ground floor is converted from garages and what would previously been animal quarters. It is now a self contained apartment with kitchen, bathroom and living room, with a separate entrance, but sharing the garden.

The pool is nestled in a corner of the courtyard so as not to totally dominate the space. It is partially dug out and partially raised, referencing the roman 'basins' of the area, while also maintaining safety for small children and animals, the edge providing a convenient place to sit or lie in the sun.

(This house is for rent so please click on the link above for information!)
