Featured Link: Central Hill Estate full proposals

Central Hill Estate is a beautiful estate completed in 1975 by a team lead by Rosemary Stjernstedt under the architect Ted Hollamby, and is currently under threat of demolition by Lambeth Council.

In June 2015, residents of Central Hill Estate asked Architects for Social Housing to work with them to come up with proposals for alternatives to demolition. Following a series of community consultation and design workshops and exhibitions, these proposals support the idea that refurbishment and infill is the most financially viable, and environmental and socially sustainable solution for Central hill Estate.

As well as new and improved community facilities and landscape, the proposal adds around 230 new homes on the estate as infill buildings or roof extension, whose construction should be able to fund the refurbishment of the existing homes.

Our key design considerations were to respect as much as possible the existing architectural intentions. Light and views of London for example, are available to all homes on the estate, so any additional homes we build do not affect these natural amenities.

In addition many of the trees on the estate where here long before the estate was built, so we have endeavoured to retain these as much as possible. We would also proposed to reinstate the trees and vegetation which was part of the original design but which has since been removed.
