Geraldine Dening Architects is a socially engaged practice, whose work covers a range of scales, from small urban interventions and domestic extensions and conversions, to art and civic installations and collaborative large scale community master plans.
Awkward inner-city sites, difficult constraints and tight budgets are at the heart of much of our work. We aim to resolve complexities in creative ways which simultaneously address social and environmental sustainability and economic realities.
GDA takes pleasure in detail and large scale simultaneously, believing that a relationship of scales is at the heart of good architecture and the urban environment.
Every project is a collaboration between the client, the builder and consultants, and we are proud of our long standing relationships with contractors and consultants who share our values and attention to detail.
Dening founded the practice in 2008 having worked for Adam Richards Architects, Metaphor, Robert Dye and MeadowcroftGriffin Architects where she was project architect for National RIBA award winner 2013 Lauriston Primary School in Hackney. She also collaborated with Sam Causer Architect in the successfully shortlisted submission for the Peabody Small projects Panel in 2014.
Geraldine Dening is interested in the social and political issues concerning architecture and particularly around social housing. She set up ASH (Architects for Social Housing) in March 2015 to explore the architect's role in the design and provision of social housing in London. With ASH she has been the lead architect on several estate master plans for alternatives to demolition (as seen on this site). With ASH she was also instrumental in setting up and running the Open Garden Estates event in 2015 and 2016.
From January 2024, Dening is a Assistant Professor in Architecture at Hong Kong university. Previously she was a Design Fellow at Cambridge University teacing on the MArch programme. She was also senior lecturer at DMU where she was co-director of the Atelier (the project office at the Leicester School of Architecture) where she taught BA, MA and M Arch, and currently runs an undergraduate unit focussing specifically on live socially orientated projects, and has been a regular critic at the Bartlett, AA, LMU, Westminster.
