Hackney Downs
complete, conversion, extension, renovation
The brief for this project bordering London Fields in Hackney was to combine two flats into one family house, create a new extension that would open up and connect the existing kitchen and living room, and improve the connection of the house with the extensive back garden.
The whole house was refurbished, with new windows throughout, and specific internal modifications included opening up the house between the ground and first floor, and creating a new entrance hall and circulation, and new glazing to the front door set to provide light in a previously unlit hallway.
In order to mitigate the effects of adding the extension on the back on the light qualities in the living room, the majority of the new extension roof is glazed, providing light and views deep into the ground floor plan.
A new 'living gutter' runs along the back of the glass canopy, which enables plants to grow out of it, and creates a real sense of a garden room. The structure of the new extension is exposed glulam beams, and exposed timber has been used throughout for floor and kitchen cabinets and work surfaces
