  • WILD/LIFE - a Post-Industrial Wilderness

This competition entry proposed Soar island as a new centre for the community, seeded by an ecology park and mixed use spaces for creative and ecological technologies.

A strip of buidings along the eastern edge of the island provide the beginnings for a new community centre. Leicester and Rutland WIllife Trust is given a new home, and local and creative arts and ecological businesses and research thrive on the water’s edge.

Canalside brick towers and saw-tooth roofs reminiscent of Leicester’s industrial past provide top lit studio spaces.

The concrete plant is retained as a post-industrial folly, and paths of reclaimed timber meander throughout the island, reminiscent of the island's previous incarnation as a train depot.

Greenhouses on the western face provinces a controlled mediation between the urban and the wild, and the whole island is given over to phytoremediation in the form of reedbeds which will filter the water and gradually return the eland to a post industrial semi-natural state.
